BASICS OF BREWING
Importance of Grind Size
A coarse grind is essential for French Press brewing. During the 4-minute steep, water and coffee are in full contact — a coarse grind slows extraction to the right pace, letting rich oils and deep flavors develop without turning bitter.
If your grind is too fine, the coffee over-extracts quickly, producing a harsh, muddy cup. Fine particles also slip through the mesh filter, leaving heavy sediment in your mug. Go too coarse, though, and the water passes through without pulling enough flavor — resulting in a weak, flat brew.
Aim for grounds that resemble coarse sea salt. This gives the French Press the resistance it needs for a full-bodied, clean cup with the bold character this method is known for.
